The Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is also called Hermitage of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios or Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies.

The current structure dates back to the 17th century, the cult of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios dates back (12th century) when an image of the Lady was found in a cave and the primitive hermitage was carved into the rock.

Today, the current temple stands in that location, where tiles evoking some episodes from the life of Our Lady stand out. The place attracts a large number of devotees to a religious festival that takes place annually in October.

The hermitage of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is a pilgrimage sanctuary located next to the coast located on a lower level (buildings that surround it) preceded by an atrium and a large walled churchyard.

Tradition reveals that the primitive hermitage would correspond to a chapel carved into the rock that is today integrated into the nave on the Gospel side dedicated to the Dead Lord.

The wall that delimits the churchyard has stone corners and is opened by a portal topped by a finned pediment flanked by two windows.

At the other end, a round arch topped by a semicircular pediment allows access to the atrium that precedes the chapel on a lower level.

The bell tower with a hexagonal plan and bulbous dome is attached to one of the corners of the churchyard.

In the chapel, the only nave covered by a barrel vault connects with the main chapel through a round arch in stonework.

On the Gospel side there is the chapel of the Dead Lord carved into the rock and opens onto the nave through an arch of pilasters with Corinthian marble capitals.

The walls of the nave are completely covered in blue and white tiles that represent episodes from the life of the Virgin on a baseboard with cartouches with Marian emblems.

On the Gospel side we find the Birth of the Virgin, Presentation of the Temple and the Wedding.

In the Epistle part we find the Annunciation that was interrupted by the pulpit, which is after the tiles, followed by the Adoration of the Shepherds.

The vault also with tiles like the Assumption of the Virgin is the main theme surrounded by the figuration of virtues.

In the main chapel, tiles with a separate figure frame the Transit of Our Lady.

In the nave, designed by António de Oliveira Bernardes, the tiles constitute an important testimony to the fortune that this type of decoration has achieved in our country, particularly in

In the city of Peniche there are two churches completely covered with ceramic panels such as Nossa Senhora da Ajuda and Nossa Senhora da Conceição (1720).

The absence of gilded carving, replaced by carving imitating marble in the main altarpiece, denoting a certain departure from national models and reflecting a more erudite and Johannine taste.
