Features of the Penedo da Saudade Lighthouse
The Commission appointed in 1902 decided definitively on the location of the lighthouse and accepted the point called Penedo da Saudade due to the most advantageous conditions in which it was found and it is 25.5 miles from Cabo Mondego and 30.5 miles from Berlenga, being in an intermediate position between the two.
The Penedo da Saudade Lighthouse is a quadrangular stonework tower with an attached building covered in reddish brown tiles and a red lighthouse 32 meters high and 55 meters high.
The Penedo da Saudade lighthouse went into operation on February 15, 1912 with a 3rd order optical device of large rotation model (500mm focal length).
On February 15, 1912, the S. Pedro de Moel Lighthouse was inaugurated, which was named Farol do Penedo da Saudade.
The 32 meter high lighthouse was powered by oil and its light source had a range of 30 miles.
The light source used was incandescence caused by petroleum vapor and the rotation of the optics was produced by the watchmaking machine.
From March 1916 to December 1919 the lighthouse was turned off due to the first world war.
The primitive optics would not remain in the Penedo da Saudade lighthouse for long, as it was moved to the new Cabo Mondego lighthouse in 1921.
The lighthouse was turned off to replace the aforementioned optics from March 3rd until July 27th, 1921
The lenticular device installed is also of the 3rd order, a large rotation model giving groups of two lightning bolts.
In 1947, its electrification was completed, giving it a light range of 46 miles and in 1980 it was automated.
Through generating sets, it was electrified in 1947 but was connected to the public distribution grid in 1980, when automation also began.
The lamp, which in 1947 was 6000 watts, reduced its power until it reached the current 1000 watts.
The Penedo da Saudade de São Pedro de Moel Lighthouse has a coastal function and has a range of 30m (55Km).
Pedestrian trails and cycle paths were built along the coast, leading to the area's beautiful beaches and the cycle path extends to Praia da Vieira de Leiria, 14 km away.
