It is located on Rua Manuel António Rodrigues, city of Leiria, in central Portugal

The Casa dos Pintores – Archeology Workshop is open to the general public and visits are free and last 30 minutes each, with ten people being able to participate per visit.

The history of the building is revealed by interconnecting the features of each functional space with the rehabilitation of the building complex through the explanation of the archaeological materials and the architectural characteristics of the building.

The Casa dos Pintores is so named due to the large number of artists who painted its facade, which highlights the balcony with a wooden balustrade and two houses located at the top of a small block that was part of the medieval Jewish quarter.

The wooden house located next to the old Largo dos Banhos corresponds to the joining of two buildings as a result of a process that took place over five centuries.

The Casa dos Pintores, one of the rare buildings that testify to the oldest housing architecture in the Historic Center of Leiria, would have served as a store, grocery store, barber shop and tavern on the ground floor and on the upper floors it would have been used for housing and domestic workshops

The main purpose of the rehabilitation project of the "Casa dos Pintores" was to convert the building with the aim of hosting the Archeology Workshop through which it is intended to develop and enhance the investigation of archaeological sites and materials in the Municipality of Leiria and to carry out their conservation and dissemination.

The interventions carried out made it possible to discover a coin from Zanzibar from the beginning of the 20th century, a fragment of a tomb stone that served as material for the central main wall with references to the 16th century, a sink for draining waste water from the 20th century that ended up being used as material for restoration work as part of the internship of a finalist in this academic area.

The interior was substantially altered by using iron beam material to support the internal structure and to prevent the original main walls from later collapsing.

The Casa dos Pintores is a reference of notable historical architecture, which is of special importance in the building complex of the historic center of the city of Leiria and is very present in the memory of the people of Leiria.

Commonly called “Casa dos Pintores”, due to the large number of artists who painted its facade, it is located in the heart of the old medieval urban center, being a piece of unique typology.
